The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
