Our Leading Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Position.

On the surface, this album might appear closer to a challenging university challenge than the latest popular music album from a musician who just had a previous hit featured an international pop star. Split into four different parts and voiced in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning symphonic album that delves into feminine mystique, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the prism of different women saints. The end of a romance—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward on this record, buoyed by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive list of contributors. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of other artists appear quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to transcend overly academic posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, and full credit belonging to the artist. Although this is not the first time project to alchemize the past with modern styles, its scale feel much higher on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. The element that truly raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you into its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts in two, you still desire to be right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That exuberant energy shines brightly on a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in with cartoonish force. The song immediately segues into the frenetic single featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux is that you never exactly know—or even wish to predict—where you will go next."

Almost each song ends in a completely different point from where it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing into digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic style starts out dark and brooding, with menacing beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves navigating the gap between bold innovation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that it has become her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. One track sung entirely in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins skyward. That trick is echoed on a different expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for high artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden treasure that takes time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the guests around the table, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative practitioner.
