The artist has given the entirety of his £25,000 honor winnings to the MVT, which functions to preserve the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

He was given the cheque on October 16 as his latest record his work was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their admission fees, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also participated, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation assisted spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from shows in big venues supports the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has said.

The musician is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

Back when they received the prize in the year 1996 for their record the album, lead singer Cocker stated that the act would donate their winnings to the organization War Child.

That year, musician the artist split her prize among a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite told the media.

In recent years, they contributed their funds to the local youth club that nurtured their group, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally the 1994 recipients the group gave their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"Winning was sufficient," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected the lives of others."

Recently, the MVT shared it had protected a couple of local spots in that region, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and The Croft in that location were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is funded by a national body and supporters who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
